We have all been there at one time or another when the urgent email went out letting all staff know that The Joint Commission (TJC) was on site. Panic ensued, everyone rushed about ensuring that all the systems were in place and in compliance, then they showed up. What you are about to read is a true story, names and locations have been changed to protect the integrity of all parties involved…

A long time ago, in a hospital far, far away… I was a young Biomed working at a remote location. I was tasked with maintaining the equipment for a rural hospital that was a little behind the times in terms of technology but excelled in patient care. The Facilities Director came into the repair shop, his face flustered and red, and he expressed his concern that JCAHO was on their way! I calmly looked him in the eyes and let him know that this was what we train for, this is what we have our database for. I grabbed my laptop and went to meet the JCAHO inspector. Turns out this individual and I had met in the past, we exchanged our polite hellos, and he asked the standard questions. I produced all the service reports he was seeking, and we were done in under 30 minutes. The client, who had been through multiple inspections, couldn’t believe that the Biomed portion of his JCAHO inspection went so smoothly. We still support this client to this day, proudly.
