Introducing…Thomas Berns
Tom Berns joined the ISS Solutions team in 1981 and has
earned multiple promotions leading to his current
position of a Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET)
Supervisor. In this role, Tom is tasked with overseeing
the daily operations of the Biomed Shop at Geisinger
Medical Center. His responsibilities include inspecting,
testing, and repairing a full range of equipment,
evaluating systems, and providing quality patient care
and patient satisfaction. His support team consists of
nine technicians and one clerk/secretary.
Richard Tevis, Clinical Engineering Manager states,
“Tom’s strength is his ability to provide what the
customer needs. He always goes the extra mile for the
customer. Even if the customer's needs are not related
to Clinical Engineering, Tom makes sure the customer
receives contact information that will help.”
For Tom, the most interesting part of his job is the
interactions he has with all the departments in the
facility. Tom enjoys working with the child life
department in particular. Tom says: “Being able to do
the little extras to make a child’s stay here as
comfortable as possible is very satisfying.”
Tom’s educational background includes a diploma in
Carpentry/Construction and an electronics certification
from NRI Electronics in Washington, D.C. He also has
certifications from Philips Medical Systems for
Intellivue, from Rockwell Laser Industries for Laser
Safety & Maintenance, from Artais Weather Check Inc. for
Artais Awos V-3-B, and from Baxter for Colleague
Volumetric Infusion Pump.
Tom and his wife Pam have been married for 23 years and
have two sons, Bryan, 20, and Khyle, 17. Both Tom and
his wife are board members of the high school football
boosters. They are very active with their sons’ sporting
events and enjoy traveling.
